Honeymoon tasting at the Biltmore Estate

by Carrie Chance
(Lansing, MI)

Our first wine tasting ventures was at the Biltmore Estate, located in Ashville NC, during our honeymoon. Included in our tour tickets was also a tour of the winery on the massive estate. The Biltmore previously had been a diary farm, so they easy converted a building into a winery. Upon entering we were given a history of the winery as well as the process for creating their wine masterpieces. The tour ended with, of course, a wine tasting room where we were given a choice of 6 wines to sample, and they were not stingy with the samples either. Since we knew we preferred sweet wines, our hostess focused primarily on sweet whites, with a few reds. Once our hostess heard we were on our honeymoon, she promptly took us to the exclusive area to receive tastings of their signature champagne, which there is normally a charge. Each definitely had its own wonderful tastes, but they convinced us to bring home a bottle of Riesling, which was exquisite and had just enough sweet for our taste. We also walked out of the winery feeling pretty good after 7 separate wine tastes.
